5 Self-Care Tips for Caregivers

Akilah Porter | Posted on August 20, 2018

As a caregiver, it is easy for us to overlook our own physical, mental and emotional needs as we care for others. This can quickly lead to feeling burned out, which would not be beneficial for us or our loved ones.

Recharge yourself with some of these helpful tips.

 1. EAT HEALTHY

Consume more nutrient-rich foods and be sure to drink about 8 glasses of water each day. Also consider taking multivitamins.

 2. GET MOVING

Get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, whether it’s running, biking or simply strolling through your neighborhood.

 3. GET MORE SLEEP

It is recommended to get between 6-8 hours of sleep every night— make sure you get enough so you are well rested the next day.

4.  SCHEDULE SOME “ME TIME”

Dedicate at least 15 minutes to doing an activity you love. It could be reading, yoga or getting massage. Whatever you choose, get lost in yourself for a little while before coming back to reality.

 5. SEEK MORAL SUPPORT

You don’t have to feel that you are alone. There are plenty of people – personal and professional – who are willing to support you as you care for your loved one. You just have to ask.

We hope these tips help as you continue on your tireless journey as a caregiver.
